Evaluating Gizzard Shad Dorosoma cepedianum Populations in two Kentucky Reservoirs Recently Invaded with Silver Carp Hypopthalmichthys molitrix

Gizzard Shad Dorosoma cepedianum are an ecologically important fish species found in many reservoirs throughout the southeastern United States such as Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. One current challenge that Gizzard Shad may face in these two reservoirs is competition with the invasive Silver Carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix. However, quantifying the impacts of this competition may be difficult because of limited baseline population data for Gizzard Shad in these two reservoirs. The objective of this study is to describe size structure, condition, age, growth, mortality, and spawning potential of these two populations. Gizzard Shad were collected by boat electrofishing and surface trawling in cove and main channel locations during the growing season in 2021. All shad were enumerated and measured, and sagittal otoliths were used to age Gizzard Shad collected in the fall. Size structure, condition, age structure, growth rates, mortality, and spawning potential of Gizzard Shad were compared between these two reservoirs and to other southern reservoirs which do not contain Silver Carp. Results from this study will be used as a baseline for future monitoring of Gizzard Shad populations in Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley and hopefully will reveal the impacts of invasive carp on Gizzard Shad

    Poems

Nathan Klein\u27s poems were written as part of a creative writing group using the theme of Where we Live. For my part of the project I tied in the theme of Where We Live through a series of poems. The aspects of the theme that I based my poems on included interpretations on where we live mentally, spiritually, chronologically, geographically in the universe, and on earth. I used the theme to pinpoint just were it is that we all truly live; even in those areas were a pin has no place

    Chronic Care Management Implementation

    Get PDF
The process of implementing management of chronic diseases can be a rigorous task for any healthcare system willing to invest resources for this care model. This paper intends to address aspects of implementation of chronic care programs, including the key disciplines required to provide adequate services. To incorporate details associated with chronic care management, a review of chronic care management program literature was conducted, with the intent of assimilating information for a model suitable for an interdisciplinary team. The study determined that implementation processes are full of intricate details. Staffing needs to be well researched, and a multidisciplinary approach, including the patient and family/caregiver, are imperative to a successful program. Finally, implications such as the lack of administrative staff knowledge, are reviewed in order to allow for further exploration to be completed on this topic

THE EFFECTS OF COMBINING REDUCED LUMINANCE AND INCREASED BLUR ON OLDER DRIVER SPEED AND VISUAL ACUITY

Drivers may be at more risk to themselves and other roadway users when vision is blurred or when luminance levels are reduced. Past research has investigated these visual conditions separately, finding that each degrades acuity without severely impairing steering ability. However, it is unknown how reduced luminance in combination with increased blur will affect driving performance. This study sought to quantify this combined effect on older adults\u27 comfortable driving speed and visual acuity by testing 10 participants in a driving simulator. The majority of the luminance and blur conditions are comparable to those the driving population may realistically encounter. Participants were asked to drive the speed at which they feel comfortable and could stay within their lane without using the speedometer. To ensure participants followed the instructions to stay in their lane, a percentage-of-time-in-lane measure was used to confirm no differences in steering performance existed across conditions. The older adult drivers only slowed down during the extreme blur condition; however, visual acuity was impaired by each manipulation. Interestingly, after the training conditions requiring a speed above 50 mph, drivers were given the opportunity to choose their speed and dramatically slowed down. This unexpected finding illustrates an important difference in what aging drivers choose to do in comparison with what they can do. This finding has important applied implications

    This Modern Life

For our project, group members explored the theme This Modern Life in its varied interpretations through fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. For my project, the theme This Modern Life was addressed through poetry. The piece I wrote was influenced by my own personal reflections in relation to what this current life has imprinted into me. As a theme, This Modern Life implies little, it left me open to consider contrasting and comparing with other ages, or simply to describe things as they currently are. Since I do not have first hand experience of what I would consider a past age , I choose to write on how things are now. I took it on an individual level as I felt that the This in the title was accurately pointing to something specific, and since I know me best I wrote about my personal perspectives because I thought I would stay consistent with the notion of writing about what is most familiar to me is best. My goal was to inscribe perspectives onto the reader that they may not have come to yet, and show the value of the given view. I accomplished this by searching deep within myself to come up with what I felt was of a highly original quality, and still cohesive and with a strong relativity to everyone\u27s life. The workshops with peers were something added to the result I came up with
